To answer the question, “what is Geezer Travel,” I have to start with a little story about the birth of the “Geezer”
It’s not easy to wake up one morning and admit you’re a Geezer, but just like those AA meeting where you have to stand up look at the crowd and admit what you are there comes a time when some of us must bite the bullet and say, “My names Tom and I’m a Geezer.”
There that’s done. Looking back admitting my new found status in life wasn’t as painful as I had thought. As I thought about it I started to swell with pride. “I’ve lived long enough to be a Geezer!”
So like any man who has crossed the bridge of self-discovery I wanted to share my Geezer transformation with my best friend, lover and confidant, my wife, Charlene.
I remember that moment when I first shared my new found identity.
Charlene and I were sitting at our kitchen table eating our Mini Wheat’s in the comfortable silence that only many years of love and friendship fosters.
I had made my peace with my Geezer identity only hours before and I wanted to share my new reality. While I chewed my sweet and crunchy cereal I thought about how to properly approach the unveiling of my new identity.
I swallowed and said in a calm voice, “I’m a Geezer.”
As I mentioned before years of love and friendship allow partners to communicate successfully without words. In response, Charlene looked up from her Mini Wheat’s and gave me a brief glance. No shrug, no nod but in the world of interpersonal sharing a silent but undeniable, “that’s nice.”
Emboldened by the positive response and aching to share my new identity and the world of possibilities it opened up I blurted out,
“You’re a Geezer too!”
The chewing stopped, that cute little right eyebrow rose and slowly her gaze rose and pivoted to me. I had her complete attention.
“You’re a Geezer too.” I said giving her my best supporting smile.
Based on her reaction and years of experience in the field of marriage crisis control, I did a quick rewind of the last few seconds and raised my hand in a gesture of peace.
In my joy of discovery I had overlooked the fact that terms like “Old Geezer” and “Geezer butt” had carried a certain negative connotation.
Still holding my hand up in a sign of peace and good will I said, “It’s not a bad thing.”
Her right eyebrow was still slightly elevated but her grip on the spoon had not transitioned from scoop to stab so I continued.
“You know that travel blog we’ve been talking about,” I said my eye still watching the grip on her spoon.
She gave a slight nod signaling me to continue.
“This morning I came up with a name for it.” I said sensing the moment of danger was beginning to pass.
“And,” she said her eyebrows returning to normal.
“Geezer’s travel,” I said barely containing my pride.
“Geezer’s travel,” she said setting her spoon down.
“You want to call our Travel Blog, “Geezer’s travel?”
I nodded again confident that the initial shock was over.
I could tell the wheels of were turning. Without comment Charlene’s right hand dropped to her smart phone and after a few quick pokes at the device the phone rang and a voice from a thousand miles away said, “morning mom,” It was our daughter Cheri.
“Morning honey,” Charlene said as she eyed me, “you know that travel blog we’ve been talking about well Tom thinks he’s got a name for it.” I looked at the phone and said, “Hi.”
“So you’ve come up with a name,” Cheri said.
“Yep,” I said looking at Charlene who was for the moment giving no clear indication of her emotional state.
“So spit it out what’s the new name?” Cheri said.
I again looked at Charlene, no response. Memo to self, “don’t play poker with Charlene.”
“Geezer’s travel,” I said.
The phone went silent. I listened for a response. I looked at Charlene who was still waiting.
“Geezer’s travel,” I repeated.
A small chuckle began to emerge from the phone and then again silence. Finally our daughter the businessperson spoke with a hint of laughter in her voice. “You want to invest your time and money on a blog and call it “Geezer’s travel?”
I looked at Charlene and saw the slight smile, it wasn’t the pride of discovery I felt but instead a mild amusement. OK I’d take amusement at least she had let go of the spoon.
“Yep,” I said.
“Your serious?” our daughter said.
“Yep,” I said noticing the smile on Charlene’s face was widening.
“Your nuts,” Cheri said.
I looked at Charlene and finally got a smile and a nod of agreement.
“Yep,” I said, understanding that when you told the world you were a Geezer you also had to accept that you were a little nuts.
There was a little chuckle and then an enthusiastic, “ how about
Geezer’s with Passports”
I looked at Charlene and she looked at me.
“I like it,” Charlene said with a smile.
“Geezer’s with Passport,” I said mulling the words over, “I like it too.”
The “Geezer,” blog was born.
In the dictionary Geezer is defined as, an eccentric senior citizen. After much discussion Charlene has agreed that we are possibly senior citizens and in doing so is willing to stand beside me and profess to the world that we are, “Geezers with Passports.”
Just to help you define if this blog my be right for your that word “eccentric”. Eccentric is defined as: Unconventional, away from center or an unconventional person.
The term “senior citizen” has been defined as: a pensioner or a retired person.
So if your one of those retired folks with an unconventional love for travel this blog may be for you.
After much thought Charlene and I have decided that we want “Geezer’s with Passports” to be a guide to travel for the mature, financially challenged adventurer.
If you have to travel first class and have an unlimited travel budget were not your blog. If you’re a kid backpacking across the world sorry we might have a few travel tips for you but there’s better blogs out there. If you love to travel and love to rub elbows with the locals and you need to do your travel on a budget we may be the perfect blog for you.
In twenty four years of marriage Charlene and I have wondered to nearly fifty countries, we’ve worked as volunteers, cruised the Bering straights, and lived on a 40’ trawler in the Caribbean. In short travel is our passion and in our blog we want to help as many people like us to realize their dreams as we can.
In our experience the two things that usually stand between living the dream and just dreaming is money and motivation. In our blog we promise to share travel tips that will make your travel dream affordable but even more important we will do every thing we can to motivate you to get up off that Lazy Boy and grab your passport and start living those dreams. Go out and smell those flowers
When you retire certain things happen that can make a huge difference in your ability to travel. As I mentioned above your now on a fixed budget so you may not have buckets of money to travel but you have other assets as a retiree that will overcome the challenge of your fixed budget. You have the time to research and find the best travel deals.
You have the flexibility that allow you to take those last minute deals and many of the responsibilities of life that use to tie you down are gone so you can go as far and as long as you want.
On my father’s refrigerator was a magnate sign that said, “Life doesn’t start till the last kids gone and the old dog dies!”
“GEEZER TRAVEL” is a road to adventure that allows people who have earned the right to travel the opportunity to realize their travel dreams while on a fixed budget. We hope Geezerswithpassports.com will be a tool for our fellow Geezers to live their travel dreams.
