A “branded credit card” is a credit card that is designed to generate loyalty from customers for a specific travel product. Some examples would be various cards offered by the big three American carriers; United, Delta and American Airlines or cards offered by the major hotel chains such as; Hilton, Marriott and Choice Hotels.
In this blog I will be concentrating on the Branded credit cards that are offered in the loyalty programs for the airline industry. For information on the Hotel loyalty programs check out my bog “ TRAVEL CREDIT CARDS 6, HOTEL CREDIT CARDS”
I believe in time every Geezer should have a minimum of one branded airline card. The primary reason for choosing a branded card is FREE BAGS. Only a branded credit card will get you free bags. All three of the top three U.S. based airlines offer free bags with their base credit cards.
American Airlines offers the Citi® / Aadvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard.
The 50,000 point bonus is nice and the $95 a year fee after the first year is reasonable and if you fly American Airlines often the early boarding and free bag are good perks with this card. To see more about this card go to:
Delta offers the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express.
This card offers a 30,000 mile bonus and the $95 a year fee after the first year is reasonable and if you fly Delta often the early boarding and free bag are good perks with this card. To see more about this card go to:
United offer the Mileage Plus Explorer Visa card.
This card offers a 30,000 mile bonus and the $95 a year fee after the first year is reasonable and if you fly United often the early boarding and free bag are good perks with this card. To see more about this card go to:
All three of these cards offer the first year of fees free and offer good bonus miles ranging from 50k to 30k. The real question is which one you will use most. Another reasonable strategy is to get all three burn the miles and then cancel the cards before the end of the year so you don’t have any fees this is a simple form of credit card churning which I will discuss in my “CHURN AND BURN” blog.
Your exploration of Branded cards does not have to stop with the three major U.S. carriers. One of the best deals out there right now is offered by South West Airlines.
Right now South West is offering the South West Chase Card.
This card offers a 50,000 mile bonus and the $69 a year fee is reasonable but applied on your first statement and if you fly South West often the free bag are good perks with this card. To see more about this card go to:
Almost every air carrier offers a branded airline card.
One of my favorites is Spirit Air.
This discount carrier offers a 15,000 mile bonus, free annual fees the first year and a yearly of $59 dollars a year after the first year. The grabber with Spirit is they offer two points per dollar and some of their flights are as cheap as 2500 points. That’s a flight for $1250 in credit card spending! In order to get these amazing deals you have to book with your Spirit card but think about after spending only $5000 dollars on your Spirit card, during off season, you and your spouse could fly from Fort Lauderdale to Aruba and back for FREE! Beware, this is Spirit you only get a backpack but let’s face it your backpack can hold two shirts, two pairs of shorts, your swim trunks and a toothbrush so can you beat this deal!
