Copenhagen Reposition Cruise $35 A Night

WOW flights to Copenhagen one-way from Miami $150. $35 a day Norwegian cruise from Copenhagen to Miami. Put together one great trip.

If this trip sounds interesting here is the break down on how you could make it work.

First, because Copenhagen is a major destination for the big three Transatlantic discounters there are flights from all over America and Canada that are going to be $200 or less one way. When I am flying into Europe for a cruise I keep my options open and I am flexible on my arrival dates. Staying flexible allows me to enjoy the best deal on flights. When you explore flight pricing I recommend using to find the best deals. With many of the discount carriers, flying one day early or late can save you hundreds of dollars. In this situation we chose to fly on the 10th because the flights were about $100 cheaper then other days that week. Keep in mind that discounters like WOW may only fly into your destination 2 or 3 times a week.

I quoted Miami because we live in the Miami area but here are some other flights from other cities that I was able to find on Google/flights: Boston $177 on Oct. 9th; Newburgh $194 on the 10th; Washington DC $200 on the 11th.

Keep in mind that if you have followed the advice in our “Travel Credit Card” advice section you will be able to use your Loyalty points or miles to pay for these flights and they will cost you nothing.

Once you are in Copenhagen, you will run into one of the problems with Europe, the hotels are expensive. It is now time to pull out one of the best Geezer Travel tools, using loyalty points for hotel rooms. Charlene and I save our loyalty points with hotels for when we travel to the more expensive cities in Europe.

After some road trips if you qualified for Choice Hotel’s  “stay two nights get one free” promotion you would have a nice bank of Choice Hotel loyalty points. Using those loyalty points  you could book  the Clarion Hotel in Malmo Sweden for 8,000 Choice reward points a night or a total of 40,000 loyalty points. So using hotel loyalty points you could put a big 0 after the cost of lodging on this trip. Because hotel rooms in the Copenhagen area are expensive using your points will save you around $750.

Malmo is a wonderful city full of it’s own wonders but when you want to go to Copenhagen you can ride the train for about $10 across the famous Oresund Bridge. A great way to explore Copenhagen or Malmo is the Hop on Hop off Bus which for about $31 will allow you to ride for 72 hours.

While you are in Malmo an Copenhagen you will find that the food is amazing but expensive according to the cost of a mid priced meal in Copenhagen is about 27% higher than in Miami so budget accordingly.

After exploring the Copenhagen area for five days it will be time to climb on your cruise ship. The Norwegian Getaway is a 5 star cruise liner and will be leaving the Port of Copenhagen on October 15th. The base cost of the cruise is $495 which works out to around $36 a day. Don’t forget that there are always hidden costs when you cruise. For this cruise the hidden costs for the 15 day cruise should come to approximately $158 per person for tax and port costs and $180 per person in “tips”. Bringing the grand total for the cruise to $834 or about $56 a day per person. The cruise spends one day in Ponta Delgada, Portugal and two days in Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda. Transatlantic cruises are not for everyone but we love being taken care of for 15 days. We read a lot and play a lot of cards and basically just relax. If that sounds like a good way to spend a couple of weeks this cruise may be for you.

We put this little trip together to show our geezer friends that you can travel well on a tight budget.

In the final analysis you will be around $150 to $200 for your flight to Copenhagen. If you are using points or miles that can be $0. If you use loyalty points for your rooms that can be $0. The hop on hop off bus and your other transport in Copenhagen and Malmo will be around $80 per person. The cost of the cruise with hidden costs included is around $834. Let’s throw in $400 per person for misc. expenses and food in Copenhagen and Malmo and your budget for 5 days in the Copenhagen area plus a 15 day cruise should be between $1200 and $1500 each.

Now lets look at one more thing, if you were at home you would have 21 days of costs such as food, entertainment, gas, electricity and wear on your car that you will not spend while you are traveling. My guess is when you crunch those numbers in your budget the difference between going on a 21 day adventure and staying home is around less then $1000 per person. So what are you waiting for Denmark and Sweden don’t have visa requirements. All you have to do is book the flight and the cruise, grab your passports and go.

  2. Great tips! I’ve found playing around with different airports and booking 2 one way tickets to be so effective. I’ve heard of some of the other tactics but I’m excited to try some of the others that are new to me:)
