Do you like cheaper gas? Has the price of gas got you down this summer? Well, Geezers their may be some relief on the way.
Charlene has stumbled into a new Mobil App for your phone called “getupside.com”. Getupside.com is a startup company that is offering cash discounts to members on the East Coast. The App presently is only available to people living on the East Coast but may soon expand across the country. This little startup company is a great idea and a great Geezer tool that may save you hundreds of dollars a year on gas, restaurants and grocery stores in the future.
At present the App is designed to save members money on gas, restaurants and groceries. With the company just getting started the App can save you 5 to 25 cents a gallon on gas if you live on the East coast and if you live in the Washington DC area it can save you up to 35% on restaurants and 15% at grocery stores.
So far Charlene and I have only used the app for Gas and the app doesn’t work for restaurants and grocery stores in our area yet but the future for this startup company seems to be bright.
In our area the App has about 7 gas stations working with it. This makes use of the App somewhat limited but in the last month we have been able to save about $10 on our gas purchases.
How the App works:
First, we went to the “Play Store” app on our smart phones and searched for “getupside”. The search will take you to the App where it can be downloaded. The download is simple and in a matter of minutes you will have the getupside.com App on your phone. To the left is a snap shot of the App’s home page.
In every area on the East coast except Washington DC the only discount the site will have available will be Gas. So when you need to fill up activate the app and you will get a list of gas stations and the price of gas available with the discount. In our area around Port St Lucie we will see a map like the one on the left that lets us know the price of gas at participating gas stations in our area. as you can see the major major gas stations like Mobil, Citgo, and Shell are presently working with getupside’s App. In our case we would chose the Shell station because were Shell members and by using our Shell membership we will get an added 5 cents per gallon off which will drop the price of our gas down to $2.75 a gallon with our 7 cent discount from getupside.com.
After we find the station we want to use we drive to it and “claim” our discount. The “claim” page of the App is on the right hand side. The app identifies thru our GPS the station we are at and then we are ready to pump the gas.
After the gas is pumped you need to request a receipt and the app will prompt you to take a photo thru the app of your gas receipt. Once you have taken a photo of the receipt the app will allocate your savings to an account from which you can apply your earning to your pay pal account or have it credited to your credit card.
The whole process is a little cumbersome but if you fill up once a week and use say 45 gallons of gas a month the savings will add up and lets face it this is a free discount.
Being Geezers Charlene and I take saving money and building travel assets seriously so we work hard to stack our gas discounts. First and foremost we always buy our gas with our American Express Everyday credit card which gives us 3X points for gas. This gem of a discount adds up to about a 14 cent discount on our gas ( 3 amex points per $1 spent X the 2 cents each AmEx point is worth X the $2.80 a gallon paid for the gas). We are then getting a 5 cent a gallon discount from our Shell membership and the 7 cent discount from getupside.com. making what we actually are paying for gas that costs 2.86.9 at the pump now cost ~ $2.50 a gallon.
Right now the advantage offered by getupside.com is fairly limited. It’s a pain to send in the receipt and track down the best gas station but we wanted to bring this startup company to our readers attention because this Mobile App could be, and we believe is, the future of gas, restaurant and grocery discounts. In the future getupside.com and similar Apps could save aggressive Geezers hundreds of dollars a year. Right now we’ll wait and watch and see what this interesting little startup company does, but, in our opinion, this could be a glimpse at the next big jump in money saving discounts and when stacked with other discounts like credit card rewards and company rewards and discounts could be a boost to our readers pocket books. It’s simple we all need gas, groceries and restaurants so lets spend as little as possible on these modern American necessities.
